A large number of Greylag Geese stay in the fjord from the end of July to the
beginning of October. They come from the whole of north Zealand and from southern
Sweden. They live mostly on
Bløden by Risø,
Selsø, and
Eskilsø. From these hunt-free areas they go on foraging expeditions to
stubble fields in the surrounding area. In early October most of them migrate
away from the fjord.
We know from ringing that they winter in south west Spain, but they are
already back by the end of March. The fjord also has a small breeding population,
mainly in the less salty south western part, with fewer further north. They
start to lay eggs very early and it is not unusual to see brooding geese with
snow on their backs.
